Summer Pymatuning Tournament

June 28-29-2003

The Cleveland Chapter 23 of Muskies Inc. held their annual summer tournament at Pymatuning Lake.  The water temperature was between 70 to 72 degrees.  The weeds were high and visible, but you could still troll over them with short lines.

Out of the 30 people fishing there were eight fish boated by some sun burned, wind blown fisherman.  Tom Morris boated a nice heavy 47” fish that handed him both first place and the big fish money.  Chuck Masimore landed a fat 44” on Saturday and a 41” on Sunday.  Those two fish gave Chuck the most fish award.  Rusty Hudreck broke the ice at Pymatuning with a healthy 35” fish that also gave him second place.  Nice going Rusty.  Chris DePaola landed third place with a 34” fish casting.  Ed Garland boated a 30” down by the dam.  And James Dean brought in two feisty subs a 24” and a ? too small to measure.  Chris DePaola also won the 50/50 and Barb Clemente won the lure board.

Eight people stayed the night at the group camping area.  We sat around and told all the fish stories we could think of until around midnight.  Next year we hope to have more people and more stories.

I would like to thank the Duck and Drake bate and tackle for allowing us to do sign up in their parking lot and also for some of that great coffee.

Our next tournament will be at Leesville July 26-27-2003.  We hope to see you there.

    Tom Bishop Sr. Memorial Tournament

May 17-18-2003

Winter is gone and it is now time for the tournaments to start.  May 17-18 we had our annual Tom Bishop Sr. Memorial Tournament at West Branch.  The weather was a bit overcast and some slight wind, but all in all it turned out to be good.  We had 30 participants in the tournament and all had a good time on the lake.

Sherman Champlin walked away with first place by landing a good looking 44” on Saturday by the dam.  On Sunday Tom Morris boated a 39” by the beach area for second place.  Pat Andio grabbed third place with a 36” he caught by the dam on Saturday.  Mike Clemente caught a 34 ½”, John Rivera Sr. a 32 ½”, and Craig Champlin a 30”.

Bill and Nancy Cline won the tackle box.  James Dean won both the rod and real and the 50/50.

We would like to thank Jarod Roof of the Division of Wildlife District Three, for doing boat inspections for the boaters in the tournament.  I would also like to thank every one for coming and supporting our club by participating in our tournament.

Our next tournament will be at Pymatuning Lake June 28-29.  There will be group camping at the Jamestown group camping area Friday night and Saturday night.  As of now check in will be at Duck and Drake in the parking lot across from Birches landing.

Chautauqua Tournament Results

August 10-11-2002

The tournament that we all have been waiting for has come and gone.  And it turned out to live up to everyone’s expectations with 70 fish caught and 74 people fishing.  The weather was good for both days.  Most of the wave motion was the cause of all the boaters and jet skies.  I must say that that lake is a beautiful lake and I for one can’t wait for next year’s tournament.

Stuart Sarkisian landed first place with a nice 47” on Sunday.  Kevin Selders netted a 46 ½” on Saturday with took second place along with the big fish pool.  Shawn Brewer boated a heavy 46 ½” on Sunday that put him in third place.  And Tom Lamp also caught a 46 ½” for forth place.  Paul Petrick took the most fish award with four fish.  A 41” 37” 36” and a 35”.  Nice job.

The total fish caught was 70 and 74 people fishing.  That was a nice turn out.  Cleveland Chapter had 37 Akron/Canton had 20 Penn/Ohio had 6 Central Ohio 1 Non Affiliated 1 and non Muskie Inc. 8.

Jason Stritmaiter won the lure board and Chris Shuck took home the rod and reel.  And Nancy Cline won the 50/50.

I would like to thank Bill and Nancy Cline for all the work they do that no one sees.  And Guy for being at the check in on Saturday to help while I did the check in.  And Mike Mihalko and Jimmy Dean for helping with the raffles.  Terry, Guy and Kevin Goldberg counted the release forms and put everything in the right place.  And my boat partner for giving up three hours of fishing time waiting for me at the check in.  Thanks to all.

Tom Bishop Sr. Memorial Tournament

 May 18 & 19 - 2002

On May 18 and 19 we held our annual Tom Bishop Memorial Tournament at West branch.  After having bad weather at our last tournament you would have thought Mother Nature would be kind enough to give us some good weather.  Wrong! Once again we had to endure the rain and the cold with our insolated coveralls and stocking caps.  Despite the cold and the hibernating muskies, we were able to keep up our good spirits.

Terry Nespeca landed the tournament winner slot with a nice heavy 35 ½” on the south flat that also captured the big fish money.  Terry’s boat partner Larry Singleton form the Summit Sportsman’s Association boated a 30 ½” also from the South flat area.  Bill Boehm netted 3rd place with a 30” from the North shore across from the West ramp.

Rusty Hudecek won the 50/50 and Bob Basic won the tackle box.  Chuck Capiean won the lure board and Kevin Goldberg won the fishing trip.

The weather was cold and the Muskies were not at all cooperative.  However as a club we trust everyone had a good time. Hopefully everyone will join use again at our next tournament on July 13th and 14th at Pymatuning Lake.  The camping is already reserved at the PA group camping area.  Check in will be at Berches Landing across from The Duck & Drake.  The times are Saturday from 7:00am to 9:00am and Sunday from 7:00am to 8:00am.  The tournament will run from 7:00am Saturday until 3:00pm Sunday.  All release forms must be in no later than 3:30pm Sunday.   Come and join use and have a lot of fun camping as well as some great Muskie fishing.

Cleveland Chapter 23 Pymatuning Tournament Report

4/ 20-21 /02

It was a long, cold and unpredictable winter but the time has come to fish for the elusive Muskie once again.  Last weekend, April 20-21, we had our Ice Out Open at Pymatuning Lake.  For the Muskie fisherman that fished the tournament you are truly dedicated to your sport.  The wind was strong, waves were high and the air temperature was cold.

The north end seemed to be the place of action, however, there was one legal and two subs caught on the south end.   Michael Quigley boated a 34”which won the tournament.  Jerry Fisher of Penn-Ohio landed a 32”taking second place plus the big fish money Terry Nespeca netted a 31”for third and Jack Moga took fourth place with a 30” on the north end.  Bob Basic released a 24” by the causeway and Bill Cline fought a fiesty 22” in 41 bay.  Congratulations to all who caught fish.

Michael Quigley won the lure board and Pat Andino won a fishing trip.  Matt Nolan won the 50/50.

We also did some camping at the group camping area in PA.  Everyone had a great time.  One of us (whom I wont mention) got stuck in the mud and had to be pushed out.  Later that night we hung around the campfire for a while telling stories.  In the morning Jack Moga made sure no one slept in by getting us all up at 6:00am sharp.  We are going to reserve the camping area for our tournament in July.  So plan on camping with us and also having a good time.

This year we are trying something new.  We are keeping track of everyone that catches a fish during our tournaments that are from Chapter 23.  And at the end of the year we are going to give out plaques for the top three with the most points.  The “top points” winner will take home a traveling trophy to be handed out at the banquet each year.

Our next tournament, The Tom Bishop Sr. Memorial Tournament, will be at West Branch May18-19.  Check in will be at the marina from 7:00am to 9:00am.  If you come later you can get in touch with Rick Burke on the CB channel 17 or the Ship to Shore on channel 68.  Then you will have to go to Rick’s boat and sign in and pay on the water.

Cleveland members at the Can-Am

By Rick Burke

Six members of the Cleveland chapter attended the Can-Am that was held on Pigeon, Buckhorn and Chemong lakes. The Canadians had 70+ fisherman and averaged 22 inches per fisherman. The Americans had 36 fisherman and averaged 12 inches per fisherman for the two day event. We will have to try harder next year. We spent a total of 7 days fishing and released over 70 legal muskie with the biggest at 48 inches. The weather was great the whole time we were there with rain only the last two nights. The six of us rented a cabin at Camp Ashtabula which is located on Pigeon lake. They have a sheltered area to dock your boats with gas near by. The cabin was very clean and well maintained. It has a kitchen with all the cooking utensils you will need coffee maker, refrigerator freezer, stove and oven. Everyone supplied there own breakfast and lunches. We all pitched in for the suppers which John Rivera planned and cooked at the end of each day. Everyone else took turns doing the dishes. Total expenses for the 7 days of fishing and 2 days of travel was well under $400.00 per person and money well spent. The Can-Am will be held at the same place next year and I hope to see more Cleveland members there. GOOD FISHING  Rick Burke

The fall outing at Lake Milton 09/8-9/01

By Tom Morris

September 8 and 9, 2001 we had out annul fall outing at Lake Milton.  We had 25 people fishing and only had seven legal fish caught and one sub legal.  Rick Burke was kind enough to bring his very large tent cover for us to gather under and have hamburgers and hot dogs with all the trimmings.  Thanks to Bill and Nancy for bringing the food and cooking it. And thanks everyone who brought something for the lunch.

Dave Klafta caught a nice 38”, Tom Morris caught a 34 ½” and a 30”, Kevin Goldberg caught a 34”, Ed Garland caught two 30”, and Nancy Cline caught a 25”.  Bob Basic won the rod and reel.

This was a great tournament we had 26 anglers and there were 47 fish caught over 30 inches and that is not counting the ones under 30 inches that did not get not turned in. Every angler caught at least 1 fish except 3 of us and yes one of them was me.  Bill Cline even managed to get a 32-inch fish.  This lake seems to be coming back from the poor fishing of a few years back. If it keeps producing fish like it did this past weekend we might be able to move the Can Am back here in 2003. Well here is a list of everyone that caught fish. Dave Klafta 36", 38" 40", Stuart A. Sarkisian 36", John Wilamosky 48", John tried for over an hour to release this fish but could not get it to swim away. he also caught and released a nice 45 incher.   Young Kenny Eggers 38.5",41.5"  his first 2 fish ever.  Kenny Eggers 41.5", 45".   Thomas S Klein 35", 41.5", Nancy Cline 30", John Rivera 30.5", Mike Clemente 31", 30.5", 34.5", 32", 28", James Dean 37.5” Lee (Rusty) Hudecek 37", 40.5", 40", Paul Frustereo 30.5", 29", Steve Klein 42.5", Guy Bechter 37", Dean Herrick 27.5" 30", 36.5", Michael Minalkc 32" 30", 36.5", Ryan Kwiatkowski 34" 34.5", 32" this was Ryan's first time muskie fishing he fished with the big Moga. Pymatuning Tournament    July 14-15

July 14 and 15 we had our summer tournament at Pymatuning Lake. Saturday was a little windy and out of the North West so the waves were on the high side. But we still had 52 people fishing and 19 fish were caught. Things looked better on Sunday and I think every one had a good time on the lake. We also had about 13 campers at the group camping area. We all sat around and told some real fish stories. Next year we need more campers.
